GRANULATION MEDIUM – WINSOR & NEWTON
What Is Granulation in Watercolours? Granulation is like Mother Nature’s brushstroke. It happens when pigments separate and settle unevenly on the paper, creating a textured, mottled effect. Imagine tiny particles dancing their own waltz, leaving behind captivating patterns.
Choose Your Pigments Wisely:
- Not all watercolor pigments granulate equally. Some are shy wallflowers, while others love to party. Experiment with different pigments to find your favorites.
- Pigments like Viridian or French Ultramarine are natural granulators. They’re the life of the granulation party!
Mix with Granulation Medium:
- Grab your watercolor palette and a separate mixing area (a spare palette or an old plate).
- Add a small amount of granulation medium to your chosen pigment. Mix it well.
- The medium encourages granulation by allowing the pigments to separate and settle gracefully.
Application Techniques:
- Wet-on-Wet Magic:
Apply the granulated mixture to wet paper. Watch the pigments dance and mingle. For extra flair, tilt your paper slightly or tap it gently to encourage the medium’s magic.
- Layer It Up:
Apply multiple layers of color. Each layer adds depth and complexity. The granulation effect intensifies as you build up those transparent layers.
