Watercolour Painting Mediums

Substances that can be mixed with watercolours to modify their properties and effects. These mediums allow artists to experiment with texture, transparency, drying times and more. Helping to achieve various effects and styles in their watercolour artwork.

Here’s a breakdown of some popular watercolor mediums:

Gum Arabic: Used to increase the gloss, transparency and smoothness of watercolours. It can also help improve the adhesion of the paint to the paper.

Masking Fluid: Used to block out areas of the paper that you want to remain white or untouched by watercolour.

Slow Drying Medium: Extends the drying time of your watercolours. Giving you more time to work and blend.

Retarder: Similar to the slow-drying medium but generally used to extend drying time for all water-based paints (not just watercolor).

Gloss Medium: Adds a glossy finish to your watercolour painting, enhancing the colour’s depth and shine.
