Alcohol Inks
Alcohol inks are a type of dye-based ink. Known for their vibrant, translucent colours and fluid, unpredictable behavior. These inks are commonly used for various art forms, such as painting, card-making and mixed-media projects. Here are the main features and uses of alcohol inks:
Surface Compatibility – Work best on non-porous surfaces, such as: Yupo paper (synthetic paper), Glossy cardstock, Ceramic tiles, Glass and Metal
Blending and Flow – One of the key characteristics is their ability to blend and flow. Artists often use blending solutions (which are also alcohol-based) or rubbing alcohol to manipulate the inks, create gradients or soften edges.
Opacity and Transparency – Typically transparent, allowing for layering and the creation of complex, dynamic compositions. The transparency is one reason why they work well on glossy or slick surfaces that reflect light. This enhances the depth of the colours.
Fast Drying – Quick drying which allows artists to work at a fast pace. However, they can be reworked if necessary, using additional ink or blending solutions.
Alcohol inks are versatile, allowing for endless creativity and experimentation. They are particularly beloved for their fluidity, colour intensity and ability to create unique, unpredictable designs.
