1. Weigh or estimate the dry fabric. As a guideline, 1 bottle of Rit DyeMore dyes up to 2 lb (0.9 kg). For 100% polyester or very bold colour, double the dye.
2. Pre-treat: remove visible stains, then pre-wash in warm, soapy water (no fabric softener).
3. Use the stovetop method only. You must keep the dyebath near boiling (about 200°F / 93°C); a washer won’t get hot enough.
4. Fill a stainless-steel pot with enough water for free movement—about 3 gallons (11.4 L) per pound (0.45 kg) of fabric.
5. Add 1 tsp (5 mL) dish detergent to promote level dyeing.
6. Cover and heat water to just below boiling (≈200°F / 93°C or higher).
7. Shake the dye bottle well; add dye to the hot water and mix thoroughly.
8. Thoroughly wet the item, then add it to the dyebath.
9. Maintain a low simmer the entire time.
10. Stir slowly and continuously—especially the first 10 minutes—to prevent splotches.
11. Dye 10–60 minutes: at least 30 minutes for polyester/poly-cotton; less for nylon (it dyes faster/darker).
12. Remove when colour looks slightly darker than desired (it will dry lighter); gently squeeze out excess dye.
13. If the fabric blend contains cotton, linen, rayon, or ramie, apply Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately before washing.
14. Rinse in warm water, then gradually cooler water until it runs nearly clear.
15. Wash in warm water with mild detergent, rinse, and dry.
